Sizing Guide
How each format is measured: stand-up, flat-bottom, three-side seal, pillow, side-gusset, spout pouch, rollstock, woven bag and valve sack.
Stand-up pouch
- Width (W)
- From side seal to side seal across the front, with the pouch lying flat.
- Height (H)
- From the top edge to the bottom edge of the flat pouch, with the gusset folded.
- Bottom gusset (G)
- Depth of the gusset with the bottom opened out (total measurement, not half). Tell us if your measurement is folded.
- Zipper position
- Distance from the top edge to the zipper; defines the space for the fill seal and the tear notch.
Written as W × H + G (for example 160 × 240 + 90 mm, about 6.3 × 9.4 + 3.5 in). Also specify tear notch, eurohole, rounded corners and, if there is a window, its position and size.
Flat-bottom pouch
- Width (W)
- Width of the front panel, edge to edge.
- Height (H)
- Height of the front panel, from the bottom to the top edge.
- Side gusset (G)
- Depth of the side gusset per side; with the bottom formed, the base measures W × G.
Written as W × H + G (for example 150 × 280 + 90 mm). Specify a front (pocket) or top zipper, side window and degassing valve.
Three-side seal pouch
- Width (W)
- Outside dimension, edge to edge, seal included.
- Height (H)
- Outside dimension, from the open mouth to the bottom seal.
- Seal width
- Width of the side and bottom seals; typically 5 to 10 mm (3/16 to 3/8 in) depending on product and sealer.
- Open mouth
- The side that is filled, normally the top; state whether it is the width or the height.
If your filler needs a usable inside dimension, give us that and we calculate the outside size. Specify the position of the tear notch, zipper or eurohole.
Pillow pouch / flow wrap
- Width (W)
- Width of the flat pouch, fold to fold.
- Length (L)
- Distance between the two cross seals, seal included.
- Longitudinal seal
- Position (centered on the back or on the side) and width of the fin seal or lap seal.
- Side gussets
- Optional; depth per side if the machine forms them.
If your machine forms the pouch from rollstock, what you specify is the roll: web width = tube perimeter plus the longitudinal seal, and repeat = pouch length. Pre-made pouches are written W × L.
Side-gusset bag
- Width (W)
- Width of the front panel with the gussets folded.
- Height (H)
- Total height, from the bottom to the top edge.
- Side gusset (G)
- Depth of the gusset per side, opened out.
- Bottom
- Flat bottom seal or folded bottom; for pet food also state whether it has a handle and a slider zipper.
Written as W × H + G per side (for example 250 × 450 + 80 mm). For pet food and grains, give the product weight and bulk density: that is how we validate that the volume and gauge will hold.
Spout pouch
- Width (W) and height (H)
- As on the stand-up pouch, with the pouch lying flat.
- Bottom gusset (G)
- Total depth of the gusset opened out.
- Spout position
- Centered at the top or in a corner, at the angle your filler requires.
- Spout
- Inside diameter of the opening and type of thread or cap; defined with the filler and the product viscosity.
State the fill volume, viscosity and whether the product is pasteurized or sterilized: that defines the structure and the spout type. The cap (with or without child resistance) is specified separately.
Rollstock
- Web width
- Total film width; derived from the pouch layout on your machine plus the longitudinal seal.
- Repeat length
- Length of each print, equal to the pouch length; measured from eye mark to eye mark.
- Maximum outside diameter
- The largest roll your machine's unwind accepts.
- Core
- Inside diameter of the core: 76 mm (3 in) or 152 mm (6 in).
- Unwind direction
- Print side and orientation of the design as it leaves the roll.
Each parameter is detailed in the Rollstock Specifications section. If you already have a roll that runs well, send us a section with its label: it is the best reference.
Woven PP bag
- Width
- Width of the flat bag, edge to edge.
- Length
- From the bottom to the mouth, with the bag flat.
- Gusset
- Depth of the side gusset per side, if any; gusseted bags stack as blocks.
- Mouth type
- Open with sewn hem, heat-sealed, with zipper, with EZ-tape or with valve; the bottom is normally sewn or heat-sealed.
- Fabric
- Tape denier and weave density (tapes per inch, for example 10 × 10), and total basis weight of the laminated bag in g/m².
Written as Width × Length (+ gusset). State the fill weight (5, 10, 20, 25, 50 kg) and the product: that defines the fabric, the lamination and whether a liner or grease control is required.
Valve sack
- Width and length
- Flat sack dimensions, edge to edge and from the bottom to the mouth.
- Gusset
- Depth of the side gusset, which defines the thickness of the filled sack.
- Valve
- Valve width, the corner where it goes and the type (internal or external, self-closing).
- Filling spout
- Diameter and length of your packer's filling spout; the valve is sized to it.
State the weight per sack, the product (powder or granular) and the packer type (gravity, air or auger). The sack closes by product compaction, with no additional sealing.
